Summary

The foreman is expected to manage construction and close construction projects that generate profits for the company.  This role is ultimately responsible for the day-to-day management of several projects and onsite operators, tradesmen, and laborers.  Directs, schedules supervises and coordinates activities of operators and tradesmen to obtain optimum use of equipment, facilities, and personnel.  Provides overall management of construction project sites and procurement through final acceptance, while ensuring project safety.  Maximizes profits and controls costs to maintain stability and growth of the organization by performing the following duties personally and through subordinates. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Studies specifications to plan procedures for appropriate construction methods on the basis of project start and completion time. 
  • Studies staffing and equipment requirements for each phase of construction and directs and supervises construction activities and related workers/equipment needs.  
  • Procurement of materials, tools, and rental equipment at specified times to conform to work schedules.
  • Recruiting, hiring, training, managing, and mentoring employees and contractors
  • Confers with and directs onsite personnel engaged in planning work procedures, executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.  This role includes subcontractors.
  • Confers with supervisory personnel, owners, engineers, contractors, inspectors, material suppliers, and/or equipment dealers to resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, or construction problems to improve construction methods and performance.
  • Inspects or reviews work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications, schedules, and safety compliance.
  • Prepares recommendations for management evaluation.
  • Prepares or reviews reports on progress and costs related to materials, equipment, and labor used and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.
  • Controls any disputes with the public and customers, including damage to personal property and damage or repair to public facilities.
  • Confers and cooperates with other onsite personnel in formulating administrative, and operational policies and procedures.
  • Investigates and reports damage, accidents, or delays at construction sites to ensure that proper construction procedures are being followed.
  • Implement new or modified plans in response to delays, bad weather, or construction site emergencies.
  • Provide effective and accurate communication to supervisors, owners, subcontractors, and subordinates by telephone, email, in person, or in written form to ensure project details and company information is efficiently relayed.
  • Monitors compliance with project safety program requirements.  Documents and ensures corrective measures are implemented as necessary.
  • Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules, and governmental regulations.

Education and/or Experience

Four (4) years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

Valid driver’s license.
