Superintendent

Summary

General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the state of Nebraska. General Excavating specializes in the construction of; underground utilities, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures.   

General Excavating is searching for a Superintendent who is expected to manage construction projects that generate profits for the company.  This role is ultimately responsible for the day-to-day management of projects and on-site craft personnel and subcontractors.  Directs, schedules, supervises, and coordinates activities of personnel to obtain optimum use of equipment and facilities.  Provides overall management of construction project sites and procurement through final acceptance, while ensuring project safety.  Maximizes profits and cost controls to maintain stability and growth of the organization by performing the following duties personally and through subordinates. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Studies specifications and plans to coordinate procedures for appropriate construction methods based on project start and completion.
  • Studies staffing and equipment needs for each phase of construction and directs and supervises construction activities and related staffing/equipment needs.  
  • Directs on-site personnel engaged in planning the work procedures, executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, plans, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays. 
  • Confers with supervisory personnel, owners, engineers, inspectors, contractors, subcontractors, and material suppliers to resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints or construction problems to improve construction methods and performance.
  • Inspects and reviews work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications, plans, schedules, and safety compliance.
  • Prepares or reviews reports on progress and costs related to materials, equipment and labor used and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.
  • Controls any disputes with the public and customers, including damage to personal property or repair to public facilities.
  • Confers and cooperates with other onsite personnel in following administrative, operational policies and procedures.
  • Investigates and reports damage, accidents, or delays at construction sites to ensure that proper construction procedures are being followed.
  • Monitors compliance with project safety program requirements.  Documents and ensures corrective measures are implemented as necessary.
  • Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules and governmental regulations.
  • Prepares recommendations for management performance evaluation.

Education and/or Experience

Four (4) years minimum related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations.
